Still trucking away

I don’t think I’ll get the second and third ten pages done tonight. Actually, I might, since I’ve already gotten the second ten pages done. But…and this is a big but, I won’t be posting them. At least not in their current state.

I was doing some thinking at work today and realized that while my second ten pages does what I need it to, in a technical sense, I think it’s sort of weak in a practical sense. Or, in other words, boring. I mean, it’s got a few laughs, but overall it felt like it was missing a scene. I figured out what that scene was and I plan on putting it back in later tonight. This will also help me take out another scene that I wasn’t too keen on in the first place.

The writing is going well, and I’m confident that the plot point at the end of act one will work the way I want it to. I’m still worried about act two, but as I’ve said, I’ll get to that when I get to it. Hopefully, Syd’s exercises will help me structure it so that it works out the way I want it to. I mean, I’ve got some great ideas for it, and know what I want to accomplish with it, I just need to really set it up so that I execute it in a manner that makes sense, practically and functionally.

But alas, these are the challenges all writers have when adapting a “great idea” into a screenplay. We all have “great ideas,” I guess the differences is that some of these actually get turned into movies. Or at least movies of the week. Or sometimes comic books. At least, that’s what I’ve heard. Not that anyone actually told me that. So…hey, how about those Giants?

Enjoy.

  1. Hey Steve,

I came across your blog and I gotta tell you it’s a very interesting read because I am a filmmaker in NY and just started writing my first feature film script myself. It’s interesting someone far away is reading the same book by Syd and working on act 1, cards, paradigm and such just like I am doing. I think it would be a nice idea if I start writing blogs as well.

Oh and aren’t you worried about somebody stealing your ideas or even a whole script when it’s done? I mean, when I took some script writing courses back in college, professors always warned us to be careful because something like that had happened many times in the past and still is. So as a fellow filmmaker, watch what you blogging. I just wanted to let you know that.

Well keep up the good work and wish you the best. Let’s keep in touch. It’ll be fun sharing experience. btw, Go Giants!
