The Blank Page – Exercise One: Summary

Well, here we are, the beginning of the process. In case you’re new to the site, I’ll catch you up. I bought the book “A Screenwriters Workshop” by Syd Field a little while ago. The book is a step by step on how to write a screen play. This blog is going to “live blog” my process as I write a screenplay following Syd’s method. If you want to know any more scroll down to some older posts.

Also of note, when I do posts on the exercises they will always follow the following format:

Chapter name – exercise number: part

Chapter name is self explanatory, its the name of the chapter the exercise is from. Exercise number is the numeric number that the exercise is. Part is what part of the exercise. Some exercises will need more than one post. In those cases the first post will be the summary, like this one, followed by Part 1, Part 2, etc. Now on to the show.

Exercise one deals with some free association writing to get down the general idea of what the screenplay is going to be about, sort of starting to put the story together. The first part is to get the gist of the story down over a few pages. The second part is to narrow it down into three paragraphs. The third part is to reduce the three paragraphs into a sentence or two each.

Lets get started.
