I don’t know how I missed this earlier this week, but OH BOY does this look like a lot of fun.
Now, if you’re not a fan of old school kung-fu movies, this isn’t for you. At all. But if you like the hyper stylized action that only Hong Kong can traditionally deliver, this should be right up your alley.
I think Kill Bill Vol. 1 let a lot of people know how much fun kung-fu action can be. It’s over the top. Insane. And not even remotely realistic. Which is why it’s so much fun. You come for the action, and if you’re lucky, stay for the story. But the action is ALWAYS first.
I wasn’t a fan of RZA until this last season of Californication. I really enjoyed his character and the shenanigans he pulled with Hank Moody. So, it wasn’t that surprising that RZA took it upon himself to put this movie together. After all, his character name in Californication was Samurai Apocalypse.
In addition to RZA, we’ve got Russell Crowe, Lucy Lui, former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista, Pan Grier, and a bunch of other legit Asian martial arts film veterans. I also think it’s pretty interesting that RZA co-wrote the story with Eli Roth. I’m sure Eli did most of the heavy lifting in the writing department, but my guess is RZA provided most of the vision, so expect a pretty crazy story that at least has a decent structure to it.
This thing is so bizarre looking I really have no idea what to expect. But I will most certainly be catching it in the theaters.
